I
covered the middle school art classes for three weeks in fall 2009 at Kamehameha Schools Maui.
Teacher Lena Casimano took leave of absence for the birth of her
grandchild, and instructed me to come up with my own lesson plans.
In the 8th
grade ceramics class we practiced our hand-building by making pinch pots and frieze tiles that illustrated Hawaiian myths. It was fantastic to work in a ceramic studio with teenagers. The 6th
and 7th
graders practiced drawing from life, color theory, and painted their
own expressive versions of famous paintings of their choice.
Later, I also covered middle school English classes and elementary school classes.
