Observing Lines in Nature

To look at a leaf and find the lines is a practice I love to have all my students do, regardless of adult or kindergarten.  To observe a small piece of nature, to figure out what you see versus what is in your mind, that is one gateway to knowing how to draw.  Seashells and coral pieces are also wonderful to use, if a bit more irregular and complex.
