2010: Interconnectedness at Pomaika'i

Often when a project didn't have a direct goal of arts integration, I would nonetheless connect to material being covered in another core subject tangentially.
Here, the Pomaika'i 5th graders were learning about interconnections in science class.

We started by doing a number of small projects using different art elements and skills-- monochromatic blending, drawing from nature, complimentary color experiments with oil pastels.

Then, I introduced the idea of interconnectedness.  I asked them to look at all these pieces they made, and figure out how they could use these pieces to express the idea.

This was definitely a question they didn't have a quick answer to, and it only came to them by experimenting, by seeing what they could do with these various pieces, what they could be turned into.
The results, however, were varied and thoughtful.
They clearly and creatively illustrated their understanding of interconnectedness.

The varied techniques we started, combined with the open-ended possibilities of collage resulted in some excellent new ideas.  Some students even began to create sculptures instead of two-dimensional pieces!
